Loved the long perspective on London, your brought it very much alive. As an FYI, I did see you IG on the sheets, went and had a look, but feel I must show restraint at the moment. Two of yours are currently awaiting ironing here too. Please keep writing, it is enjoyably visual.
I love your writing so much! Very vivid. I squatted in London for 4 years in the late 90s (in Hackney!)...wild times. I was very bitter that they made entrance to galleries and museums by donation after I moved away from the UK. I was so poor in those days I couldn't afford to pay full pop.
I remember I Want To Be A Cowboy! Now it's playing in my head...
Also, I saw your IG post, because I get an alert every time. If I ever get another job I'll be straight onto your website, but no-one seems to want to hire women in IT once they hit 60.
In the first half of the 80s I lived a very odd life in Perth - I saw The Birthday Party's last gig, and went to art school (costume design), in between working in accountants' offices. The second half, I moved back to Melbourne, finished my degree and had a baby.
It's such an annoying song isn't it. Although the 80's did have a lot of great music and bad to mediocre food, but i was a child for all of them so my idea of the wide world was somewhat informed by that!
You’ve probably already heard of the podcast ‘Wardrobe Crisis’ by Clare Press. Podcast on sustainability in fashion and she includes non western voices.
I do know about Clare but unfortunately I find her to be the champion of several people and organisations who are genuinely appalling - the Ethical Fashion Committee and its head Simone Cipriani for starters, and Li Edelkoort for another. Maybe she has learnt to be better and more discerning but I switched off from her years ago because at the time she was a perfect example of a white woman writing about a topic they knew very little about, listening to other white people or people pandering to whiteness, and desperately unaware of what was actually happening on the ground in non-Western countries. Aja is the real deal, Clare is....or was (I am always open to people learning to do better)...not.
Good to hear about your travels. Your description of the smell of places took me back to childhood memories. My father, a pastry cook smelt of flour, butter and BayR. My dashound who smelt of just cooked biscuits The thought of Spring brings the fragrance of Wisteria. I really enjoy your writing. Keep it up.
I loved your story about London as well. Your description of life in your French village is wonderful. Thank you for your beautifully descriptive writing.🌸

I re-read those books almost once a year, all of them. They remain screamingly funny and as they go on they get darker and darker. Mole is one of the great literary creations, and these books are such precise social and political commentary
Me too Hanna. Me too. I agree with absolutely everything you've said above. I was devasted when Sue Townsend died, selfishly so because I wanted more Adrian. Did he survive prostate cancer? Did he finally get his happy ending with Pandora? We'll never know :( So lovely to "meet"another Adrian fan Hanna, I'm Australian so not many here- they don't know what they're missing!!!

Glad you've found your home.
I'm glad someone saw them!!! xoxo
i wish you’d always include your website for those who have ZERO social media from like five years back.
The link is in my substack profile as well :)

Yeah I was super surprised to find they were all free! As they should be!

The 80s were definitely interesting!

Great article. Congratulations on your work. Beautiful fabrics with a new life ahead.

This was a great read. Anyone who knows about Adrian Mole is ok with me :)
